About Department for International Development - DFID

DFID has a rapidly growing poverty reduction programme in Ethiopia. The DFID country programme is the largest in Africa with a budget of £282 million in 2012/13. Ethiopia has a high political profile within DFID and is a focus of much international attention. With high levels of poverty and the second largest population in Africa, Ethiopia’s success in fighting poverty is important for Africa’s overall attainment of the Millennium Development Goals.

The programme is managed by four teams: Livelihoods and Humanitarian, Governance and Security, Human Development, and Wealth Creation and Climate Change. Between them, these teams aim to protect the most vulnerable Ethiopians from shocks, consolidate development gains, and help Ethiopia to achieve MDG-related targets. DFID is seeking to make our aid more transformational, ensuring that we achieve the best possible value for money from UK development assistance.

The Livelihood and Humanitarian Team works on programmes and policy dialogue which help poor and vulnerable households to meet their basic needs and achieve food security. This includes social protection for the chronic / extreme poor; bringing peace and development to the Somali region; and humanitarian programming in response to seasonal peaks in food insecurity.
